My Transition to Raw Living Foods
I have been a vegetarian since 1972 when I went to India on a student exchange program. I have been a vegan since 1990 which I did for health reasons with excellent results. I have been exposed to raw foods over the years but never thought it was for me and preferred cooked foods, thinking it was healthier for me. In the beginning of 2007 I put out a prayer, asking how I could go to the next level of transformational growth and be able to have and hold more light, to be of better service. For the next six months I ate really pure cooked foods, all organic, whole foods, made by me. What I realize now is that I was preparing for what was next.
The Universe gave me some gentle nudges over the next few months. I went to Café Gratitude in Marin, California and felt a monumental shift in the soul of my being. I bought some Maca, not having a clue what it was but felt drawn to it. Later, researching Maca on the web, I fell into the Internet world of raw foods. Fascinating, but I still wasn't "going raw". Next, a raw foods class was taught at my house, but I still wasn't "going raw" and made sure that everyone knew it. Next, a teacher for my holistic center arrived to stay at my house with her Excalibur dehydrator. While she taught about crystals by day, she taught me about raw food prep by night. But I still wasn't "going raw".
As I started reading the books, I was struck by the Kirlian photography of raw foods in David Wolfe's book, SunFood Nutrition and by the before and after photos in Alyssa Cohen's book on raw food cooking. I couldn't stop reading. My husband thought I was going nuts. On July 1st, 2007 I decided to go raw for the summer and haven't looked back since. I have been totally raw for two years. Once I made the plunge, it was really easy, with the help of Divine Grace. It has been the most fun with food that I have ever had. The world of "dietitis" has been left behind. All the perks that you hear about are true: weight loss, more energy, stronger immune system, etc. But for me the stronger reason is the spiritual aspect. It is what pulled me to this path and it is what has kept me on it. "Going raw" is way beyond the food. It is a path of transformational growth that can be oh, so fun, and really delicious! You meet amazing people along the way.
So whether you are just thinking about "going raw" or have taken steps, I encourage you to further your exploration, with grace and ease. Be gentle with yourself. There is no right or wrong way to do this, only your way. Make it as simple or creative as you wish. I hope to meet you at one of my classes some day!
